Maxfield Parrish made ‘Princess Parizade Bringing Home the Singing Tree’ with oil and glazes on board. Imagine him, layering those translucent glazes, each one catching the light a little differently, like the memory of a dream. I see the princess, her dress billowing like sails, and the tree she carries, a promise of life and song. Parrish's world is so crisp, so meticulously rendered; yet, it vibrates with pure feeling. The sharp, stark line between her bright face and the dark cloud is really amazing and maybe why I like it so much. It cuts right through! He’s part of a lineage of artists who dared to dream in color, like the Pre-Raphaelites, but with an American twist. Parrish's art isn't just about what we see, but what we feel, what we long for. It invites us into a space where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, and where even a tree can sing.
