This is a print, made in The Hague by L. Lazare, designed to teach children how to read. Prints like this offer us a glimpse into the culture of learning and literacy in the Netherlands, most likely in the 18th or 19th century, when universal education was becoming more widespread. The presence of text in both Dutch and French suggests that it was aimed at a relatively privileged multilingual segment of the population. It seems likely this print was not only a tool for learning, but also a marker of social status and cultural capital. By looking at prints like this alongside other historical documents, such as educational treatises, school records, and children's books, we can gain a much richer understanding of the social history of education and the ways in which literacy was promoted and practiced in different times and places.
