Curatorial notes

This engraving by Jacob Houbraken portrays Samuel Clarke amidst symbols of enlightenment and knowledge. Note the books and the radiant sun motif. Since ancient times, light has represented knowledge and divine illumination, piercing the darkness of ignorance. We see this emblem echoed through the ages, from the halo in religious iconography to the torch of enlightenment. Here, the sunburst conveys Clarke's intellectual and spiritual illumination. Consider also the intertwined serpent on a staff, a variant of the Caduceus. Commonly associated with medicine and healing, it originally symbolized commerce, negotiation, and equilibrium. Its presence here suggests the healing power of knowledge and reason. These symbols, laden with history, engage our collective memory, revealing how images evolve, adapt, and continually resurface across time, imbuing the portrait with layers of meaning that resonate on a subconscious level.
