Paul Klee made this painting, Hardy Plants, with oil on canvas. Imagine him layering these colours, blush and rose, peach and fawn, like dawn gradually breaking on the horizon. I think he's exploring a strange little world. The lines appear etched, almost like they were made with a very fine point, while the smudges of brown pigment add depth to the otherwise flat surface. I wonder if Klee knew these plants, or were they conjured from memory? The paint is thin, allowing the texture of the canvas to show through, which creates a sense of transparency. It feels like he’s capturing something fleeting, an ephemeral moment that trembles between representation and abstraction, a conversation between forms. Klee and other artists have been in an ongoing exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another's creativity, offering new ways of seeing.
