This photo of the Hampoort in Grave, was produced anonymously. It's a dreamy scene in shades of brown and grey. I can imagine the photographer, setting up their equipment, carefully framing the Hampoort against the flat landscape. The photographer probably had to wait for the right light, the sun to be just so, to capture the scene. I wonder if they thought about the people who had passed through this gate over the years, soldiers, merchants, travelers, all with their own stories and destinations. It is a view of the past but also a record of the present, of the way things were at that moment in time. The river in the foreground gives a sense of movement and life to the scene, reflecting the sky and the buildings like a mirror. The photographer and the artists are in an ongoing dialogue with the past, finding new ways to represent the world and our place in it.
