Curatorial notes

Anthonie Willem Hendrik Nolthenius de Man created this etching of a seated Wallonian farmer in 1824. The composition is dominated by the figure, placed almost centrally, creating a sense of directness and simplicity. Notice the meticulous use of line; the varying densities articulate form and texture, from the soft folds of her shawl to the rough-hewn texture of her wooden clogs. There is a subtle contrast between the detailed rendering of the figure and the more sparsely treated background, which brings the figure into sharp focus. This treatment embodies a semiotic interplay between the representation and reality, questioning conventional portrayals of rural life. The chair she sits on seems to be missing a leg which destabilizes the perception of order and challenges fixed meanings. This etching serves as a cultural text, inviting us to reconsider our understanding of representation.
