Curator: Editor: Asher Brown Durand's "A Reminiscence of the Catskill Clove," painted in 1858 using oil on canvas, presents this very serene landscape scene. What strikes me most is the painting's texture; you can almost feel the bark of the trees and the coolness of the water. What are your thoughts when you observe this painting? Curator: This piece invites us to consider not just the finished product, but also the labor and the materiality inherent in its creation. Think about Durand venturing out, en plein air, to capture this scene. The cost of the paint, the canvas, even the brushes—these are commodities tied to specific social and economic conditions. What can that tell us about artistic production in the mid-19th century? Editor: That's a very different way of looking at art than what I usually do! Considering the materials themselves, beyond just what's represented, puts it into a context of production. So, knowing this was painted en plein air, how does the concept of readily available and transportable materials, like the canvas and paints he was using, influence how he captured this landscape? Curator: Precisely! It allowed Durand to engage directly with nature, to observe and record its subtleties. However, it also represents the availability of those materials and leisure time afforded by a developing economic system. Was everyone in 1858 able to spend time and resources painting landscapes? Editor: I guess not! It really highlights how art-making is so entwined with society and the resources available at that time. I had only considered it as a purely aesthetic piece previously. Curator: Indeed, this way of seeing is not the traditional method. Analyzing art through the lens of materials, production, and consumption offers insights beyond aesthetics. The act of art making, how it’s constructed by available materials is an exploration into a rich history beyond the canvas. Editor: Absolutely! Thinking about what materials were accessible, or who was consuming and making art during that time, provides a totally different entry point for analysis. Thanks!
