Auguste Danse created this print of a ‘Mother with baby on her arm’, using etching, around 1879. Danse lived through a period of immense social change. Mass migration to cities changed family structures, challenging traditional representations of women. Here, the mother is not an ethereal being, but a woman with a palpable presence. Her slightly disheveled hair and simple clothing situate her in a domestic, rather than idealized context. The baby, held securely, appears contemplative, its gaze directed away from the viewer, perhaps towards an imagined future. This image creates an intimate encounter, celebrating the quiet strength inherent in motherhood. It invites us to consider the diverse experiences of women, and to appreciate the nuanced realities of their lives.
