Felice House made this dreamy painting, Woman in Wind, sometime in the 20th century with oil paint. The woman's hair is a vibrant red-orange, mirroring the sky, painted with these flowing, gestural marks that capture the feeling of wind. I can imagine Felice House in her studio, working on this canvas, maybe outside, capturing the light and feeling the wind. It’s so material, so immediate. The way she applies the paint, not too thick, but just enough to give it some texture. It must have been a challenge trying to capture such a transient moment! It reminds me of other paintings of women in landscapes, like the Pre-Raphaelites. It’s like House is in a conversation with all these other painters across time. Each artist riffing off one another, trying to find new ways to express the same old human feelings. And that’s the beauty of painting, right? It's about embracing ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations.
