Franz Edmund Weirotter made this drawing, "Schuppen unter hohen Bäumen", using pen and grey ink over pencil. These are of course traditional materials, but their seeming simplicity belies the skill involved. Look closely, and you'll see how Weirotter uses the ink to exploit the whiteness of the paper. He evokes the quality of light filtering through the high trees, casting shadows on the rough texture of the sheds. The fine lines create a sense of depth and atmosphere, bringing the forest to life. Weirotter’s method involves a deep understanding of the materials, and the landscape around him. It is a landscape transformed by manual labour, suggested by the humble sheds. This reminds us that art is never divorced from the wider world. Weirotter elevates both materials and subject matter. He asks us to consider the cultural significance of our environment. By focusing on materials, making, and context, we can appreciate the full meaning of Weirotter's artwork.
