This is Lambertus Antonius Claessens’s engraving, “Portret van een jonge man met donkere pet”. Claessens lived through the tumultuous years of revolution and empire in Europe, and was working during a time when the established order was being questioned. The portrait is a copy after a self-portrait by Rembrandt. It depicts a young man in a soft cap and fur-trimmed coat. The choice to replicate Rembrandt is telling. Rembrandt, celebrated for his innovative approach to portraiture, captured the nuances of human emotion and experience. In this way, Claessens invokes the legacy of Rembrandt. Claessens highlights the master's empathetic gaze, and elevates the ordinary. Through the act of replication, Claessens engages with themes of artistic legacy, national identity, and the enduring power of representation. This image serves as a reminder of the intricate ways in which art reflects and shapes our understanding of ourselves and society.
