To me, the precise rendering of textures contrasts against the unreality of the situation. The detail is almost photographic, but it captures something that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. What philosophical school of thought, if any, informs Remedios in this particular work? Is she leading us away from rationalism and towards an alternative interpretation of realism? Curator: Varo integrated elements from diverse esoteric traditions, so one must be mindful in one's reading. A look into hermeticism or Kabbalism may assist with finding out some answers! This framework enabled Varo to negotiate identity and push boundaries. Her practice involved a conscious act of reclaiming female agency.
