Curator: Félix Bonfils created this albumen print, currently titled "Untitled (group of adults and children)," sometime between his birth in 1831 and death in 1885. I find it so...intimate. Editor: It strikes me as posed, almost staged. The light is flat, and everyone seems to be staring directly at the camera. There is a stiffness about it that makes it feel very formal, despite the casual garb. Curator: Perhaps, but look at the children. One is clutching a doll, another shields their face—moments of unguarded vulnerability. The garments themselves—the way they're draped—evoke ancient traditions, a cultural continuity. Editor: I see the attempt at timelessness, but the very presence of the camera anchors it to a specific moment in the 19th century, a moment of colonial encounter. The image becomes a document, a record of that power dynamic. Curator: That’s a fair point. There is a melancholy here. I wonder, did Bonfils ever consider the emotional impact these images would have generations later? Editor: I agree, the visual symbols are potent, regardless of intention. This image, like a faded map, guides us through layers of history and feeling.
