Francesco Trevisani created this painting, "The Martyrdom of the Seven Sons of Saint Felicity," using oil on canvas. The eye is immediately drawn to the chaotic scene, divided between the earthly violence below and the ethereal heavens above. This dynamic division evokes a sense of dramatic tension. The composition uses a complex interplay of light and shadow to guide us through the story. Notice the stark contrast between the pallid bodies of the martyred sons and the vibrant colors of the angel descending with the victor's crown. Trevisani masterfully employs color as a semiotic tool, contrasting earthly suffering with divine reward. The painting engages with the philosophical discourse of sacrifice and redemption prevalent in the Baroque period. It challenges fixed notions of power, contrasting earthly authority with divine grace. Note how the artist uses the human form to convey raw emotion. The contorted bodies and anguished expressions reflect a destabilization of classical ideals. This artwork stands as a testament to the enduring power of art to explore complex theological themes and moral questions through form, composition, and color.

The most prominent cardinal in Rome ordered this painting as a gift for a French minister and his wife, whose name, Catherine Félicité, inspired the choice of subject. The Christian martyr Saint Felicity – here in a yellow gown – was forced to witness the martyrdom of her seven sons before herself being beheaded. Trevisani included two self-portraits: as the standing man at left, and as the man looking out at us from behind the statue at right.
