This is Anna Sipkema’s December calendar page, adorned with stylized holly leaves and berries. The holly, with its evergreen nature and bright berries, has long been a symbol of winter’s endurance and the promise of life amidst the cold. Consider the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, where holly was used as decoration, a tradition that echoes through time into our Christmas celebrations. The plant, a symbol of resilience and immortality, reminds us of nature's cyclical rhythms, carrying cultural memories and emotions across generations. Even today, the image of holly evokes feelings of warmth and hope, revealing how ancient symbols continue to engage us on a subconscious level, resonating with the collective human experience. The cyclical progression of symbols, evolving and resurfacing with new meanings in different contexts, exemplifies the enduring power of visual language.
