Hans Baldung created this “Adoration of the Magi” using oil on wood panels in the early 16th century. At its heart, this is an iconic biblical scene representing recognition and reverence. Note the figures flanking the central scene; to the left, Saint George stands triumphantly over a dragon, a symbol of good conquering evil, and to the right, a knight with an imperial eagle banner. The eagle, a symbol of power and empire, hearkens back to ancient Rome, but here, its presence introduces a layer of secular authority and worldly power into a sacred narrative. Consider how gestures of submission and reverence echo across cultures, from ancient Egyptian depictions of pharaohs receiving offerings to medieval portrayals of vassalage. These images, like Baldung’s, engage our subconscious understanding of power dynamics and respect. The collective memory of such symbols affects our interpretation, adding layers of complexity to even the simplest of scenes.
