This drawing of a sofa was made by Carl Weiss, and well, it's just lovely. Weiss gives us a kind of architectural rendering, a study of form and function with a touch of old-world charm. The color here is so specific, like faded velvet. It feels like he mixed just the right amount of pigment to capture the light. I love how the texture of the sofa is implied with these tiny strokes, as if he was building up the surface one layer at a time, just like a painter. That little flourish above the sofa – is it a frieze? – it feels like a detail from a dream. It's like Weiss is saying, "I see the world in layers, in fragments, in echoes." It reminds me a bit of the surrealist interiors of Giorgio de Chirico, but with a softer, more domestic touch. Art, like furniture, is an ongoing conversation, a remix of ideas and styles across time. Isn't it great?
