Anders Zorn painted "View from the Ship Island Pier" in 1890 using oil on canvas. Zorn was a master of the traditional medium of painting, and in this case, the way he laid down his brushstrokes is just as important as the subject of the painting itself. The artwork shows us a lively harbour scene, with boats of various sizes moving along the water, and some figures in the foreground. The real topic of the painting is the way in which human labour drives the modern world. Notice the steamships and other vessels in the distance, belching out smoke and making their way through the water. These are all products of industrial manufacture. These ships have revolutionized trade and travel, and were built by the coordinated labour of many people. Zorn has given us a glimpse of the modern world, but he's done so with a traditional medium. It reminds us that even the most advanced technologies depend on the skilled hands of workers, and on the creative vision of artists.
