Tassel band Possibly 1930 - 1940

This tassel band, with no known date, was woven anonymously with fiber. I can only imagine the making of this artwork, the hours and hours that went into it! This maker's intention feels so clear, so precise. The color choice is so lovely. The burgundy sets the foundation for the grid. The eye travels over the top from left to right, where a series of other figures break up the rhythm. These shapes are repeated in gold and cream. The grid becomes a playground, and the tassels act as the final punctuation marks of this beautiful piece. The anonymous artist would probably be so surprised to know that their work has been collected by a museum! There is such an ongoing conversation between artists, and it's beautiful to see this piece, as it allows for multiple interpretations and readings.
