Curator: Here we have "The fourth oriental head", a print by Constantino Cumano, made sometime between 1770 and 1803. The work is currently held at the Rijksmuseum. Editor: He looks almost burdened by something. There’s a gravity in the set of his jaw, the downturn of his eyes. But his hat looks incredibly cozy! Curator: Indeed. The portrait has a very particular look of the Dutch Golden Age. Consider all the connotations associated with attire and what they suggest. His soft cap references Turkish fashion, and, at the time, things considered 'Turkish' were fashionable and perceived to be exotic. Editor: Fashion as a form of cultural tourism, interesting! But there’s a psychological element too, I think. The 'oriental head' as a mask, perhaps? The identity he projects outwardly, versus what’s hidden underneath? He doesn't make eye contact with the viewer. Curator: He’s averted, introspective, not at all confronting us. We observe his world, yet it remains remote, seen through the soft etching that defines every curve of his gaze. The cross-hatching, layered and light, is a powerful means of depicting density, isn't it? Editor: Absolutely! It's like trying to catch smoke. Even in the dark cloak, Cumano manages to make the figure seem almost ethereal. Almost as if he is about to speak and will vanish as soon as he does! The whole image appears haunted by history, dreams, and cultural projection. Curator: What I appreciate most about Cumano’s work is how he makes a statement through such soft strokes. Editor: Yes, it feels quite radical for its time. There is a certain gentleness that speaks volumes. Thanks for letting me wander through my associations with it. Curator: It has been a pleasure to observe these heads alongside you and share perspectives. Thank you.
