This small black and white photograph, from the Estate of Isabel Wachenheimer, feels like a memory, doesn’t it? I love the way the image is presented, centred within the slightly larger, textured paper. It reminds me of the way we frame a moment in our minds, setting it apart. The subject is a man on a beach, possibly on vacation, holding a briefcase, not quite blending in. The details are soft, the tones gentle, like a faded dream. Look at the texture of the sand and the way the light reflects off the sky. It's simple but so evocative. What strikes me most is the ambiguity. It feels like a still from a film that was never made. The composition reminds me of the work of artists like Gerhard Richter, who also explored the relationship between photography and memory. Ultimately, it’s the open-endedness that makes this image so compelling.

The German Eugen Wachenheimer had a brilliant career at the Deutsche Bank and served as a naval officer in the First World War. In 1922 he married Else Moos. The Anti-Jewish laws instituted by the Nazi regime forced them to flee to the Netherlands in 1937. The photograph at the lower right is the last one taken of Eugen. He stands with his back to the camera behind his daughter. Eugen and Else were gassed at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944.
