This side chair at the Art Institute of Chicago was crafted by Abraham Roentgen in the 18th century. Notice the rich, dark wood that forms its intricate frame, a stark contrast to the vibrant red upholstery of the seat. The chair is a symphony of curves and carvings. The backrest is crowned with an elaborate crest, flowing down into sinuous supports adorned with stylized foliage. The cabriole legs, terminating in scrolled feet, further emphasize this sense of movement and organic form. One can see the structure and ornamentation of the chair speaking to the opulence and theatricality of the Rococo period. The chair doesn't merely serve a functional purpose but acts as a statement piece, reflecting the era's values of elegance and refinement. Note how the chair destabilizes the category of furniture, becoming a sculptural object in its own right.
