Yun Hyong-keun made this untitled painting on canvas sometime in the 1970s. What I see here are these deep, solemn columns, painted in shades of black, green, and blue. It’s all about the vertical, the way those dark pigments bleed into the lighter hues, creating a sense of depth and quiet contemplation. You can almost feel the artist at work, staining the canvas, letting the paint soak in and do its thing. Imagine the concentration, the slow, deliberate movements. Each layer, each brushstroke builds upon the last. There's a real sense of process here. It’s like he's creating these porous pillars, these abstract portals. This piece makes me think about other painters, like Mark Rothko, who were also chasing after that sublime, transcendent feeling through color and form. It’s all one big conversation, you know? Artists riffing off each other, pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. And at the end of the day, it’s all about feeling, about creating something that resonates with our shared human experience.
