Curatorial notes
This is a drawing called 'Twee aangespannen paarden, mogelijk op of nabij de Dam te Amsterdam' by George Hendrik Breitner. The artwork is divided into two distinct sections. On the left, we observe a dense arrangement of lines and shaded areas, which vaguely suggest architectural forms. The right side contrasts with a lighter touch, featuring more open space and less defined shapes. This composition reflects a semiotic interplay between presence and absence. Breitner's strategic use of line, weight, and spatial dynamics reveals a concern with the structural elements of representation. We can consider the way these formal aspects engage with broader philosophical ideas about perception and reality. By fragmenting and abstracting the image, Breitner challenges the viewer to actively participate in constructing meaning. In its incompleteness, the drawing functions as a site of ongoing interpretation.
