Gebre Kristos Desta made this abstract painting with oil on canvas using a limited palette of blues and greens. I imagine the act of painting for Desta was like a meditative process, where each brushstroke was a step further into his inner world. Looking at those intersecting lines and floating circles, I get the sense he was exploring ideas about connection and movement. The color palette feels deep and contemplative, yet the composition has a playful energy that reminds me a little of Kandinsky's circles and squares. You can see how the paint is applied in layers, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, giving the surface a dynamic texture. I love the way those thin lines crisscross the canvas, creating a sense of depth and dimension. It's almost as if he was trying to map out some unseen territory. Painters are always in conversation with one another across time and space, and it’s nice to think of Desta riffing on other artists' ideas, adding his unique voice to the mix. Painting allows for ambiguity and uncertainty. Ultimately, it invites us to bring our own experiences and interpretations to the canvas.
