Curatorial notes

Paul Cézanne made this oil painting, In the Park of Chateau Noir, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Cézanne was working in France during a period of significant social and artistic change. His distinctive brushwork and unconventional perspective, visible in this work, challenged the established academic painting traditions. The art institutions of the time favored realism and idealized portrayals, but Cézanne was more interested in exploring the underlying structure and form of his subjects. Chateau Noir was a site that Cézanne repeatedly painted in his later years. In his paintings of this site he seems to question the distinction between architecture and nature. Art historians consult letters, exhibition reviews, and other archival materials to understand the complex dialogue between artists like Cézanne and the institutions that both supported and resisted them. The meaning of an artwork is contingent on its social context and its reception by the public.
