Curatorial notes

This photogravure by Peter Henry Emerson captures a view of the River Yare in Great Yarmouth. Dominating the scene are the masts and rigging of ships, elements that speak to trade and passage across waters. Consider the symbolism of boats throughout history; vessels have appeared as far back as ancient Egyptian funerary rites, where boats were depicted carrying souls to the afterlife. In ancient Greece, the ship Argo was a heroic symbol of Jason's quest for the Golden Fleece. In both instances, vessels represent a journey from one state of being to another. Even today, we see the motif of a journey resurface, the symbolic 'ship' carries not just goods but also the dreams and fears of those aboard. This image of Great Yarmouth thus becomes more than just a view; it’s a part of our collective story.
