Editor: Here we have Günter Brus's *Run-through of an Action* from an unknown date. It looks to be mixed media on paper. It feels very procedural, like a set of instructions. What do you see in this work? Curator: The semiotic structure is immediately apparent. Brus utilizes language as a primary material, organizing these sheets into a sequence. Consider the distribution of text, its density and rhythm across the four panels. Editor: So, it's more about the arrangement of the text than what the text says? Curator: Precisely! How does the visual weight of the script create a compositional tension, a kind of performative typography? Editor: It’s like the text itself is the action he’s referring to. It gives a whole new meaning to “concrete poetry”. Curator: Indeed, the materiality of language becomes the event.

These sketches represent Brus’s detailed plans for a 56 minute performance, listing props, sound effects and specific body positions and movements. Restrained by leather thongs fastened to his ankles, the performer moves intermittently about a room. He reacts to noises including loud bangs, ticking, and a high-pitched sustained sound. At one point he writhes and screams hysterically. He stabs into a wrapped parcel, releasing silver liquid. Originally planned for the Galerie Nächst St Stephen in Vienna, the performance was cancelled by the gallery’s director on the grounds of being ‘too monolithic’. Gallery label, July 2008
