This photograph is titled “Flooded Suburb of Paris Seen From a Window,” by G. Dangereux. The soft sepia tones are so evocative. I imagine the artist, maybe on a gloomy morning, peering out from behind a window, watching the water level rise in this Parisian suburb. What was on their mind as they framed this view? Were they thinking about the social implications of the flooding, the impact on the lives of the residents? Or maybe it was more of an aesthetic fascination with the way the water transformed the familiar urban landscape. The surface of the water is so still it becomes like a mirror. There's a sense of quiet drama in the scene. I think of other artists who have found beauty and meaning in the everyday, in the overlooked corners of urban life. It feels like artists are always in conversation with each other, riffing off each other's ideas and visions. Each artwork adds to the conversation, like adding another layer of paint to a canvas.
