Arsen Savadov made this photograph, "Donbass Chocolate," and though the date is unknown, it feels so immediate, so of the moment. Look at the faces – the soot, the grime, the weariness, juxtaposed with these delicate, fluffy tutus. It's a collision of worlds, and I mean, isn’t art always about smashing things together to see what sparks fly? The way the light catches the tulle, those soft, almost ethereal skirts against the backdrop of what looks like a post-industrial space, it's unsettling. Each figure carries this burden of labor, and this strange, defiant vulnerability. There's a tension there between strength and fragility. It makes me think of the paintings of Marlene Dumas, where emotional intensity is explored through unconventional, often unsettling imagery. It also makes me think of Cindy Sherman’s photographs, where identity is questioned through performance and representation. This image refuses to settle, it leaves us with more questions than answers, which, to me, is the mark of truly great art.
