Curatorial notes
Johann Georg Wille created this print of a soldier leaning on a cannon in 1753. Made during the Enlightenment, this depiction reflects the era's interest in military subjects but also raises questions about power, class and social hierarchy. Wille situates us behind the soldier, which subtly implicates us. Encased in armor, he's perhaps an officer, towering over the other figures who seem to be of a lower class. Note the gaze; the figures beneath him seem to look to him for instruction. Here, the cannon and armor represent both protection and authority. There's a certain vulnerability in seeing only his back, prompting us to reflect on the costs and implications of war. It serves as a reminder of the human stories behind grand historical narratives.
