This photograph, taken by an unknown artist, captures Eugen Wachenheimer looking down at his wife and daughter. It's a study in grays, from the dark background to the soft textures of their faces and clothing. There's a real intimacy here. It's all about surfaces; the smooth sweep of the father's hair, the soft, rounded forms of the child's face, and the mother's gaze. Look at the way their eyes connect, a quiet, unspoken conversation passing between them. The light isn't harsh, but gentle, almost caressing their faces. The subtle contrast makes you think about how things are revealed, and what remains in shadow. It reminds me a little of the photographs of Lisette Model, she captured a similar quality of observation that feels revealing and ambiguous. The photo doesn't tell us what to think, but invites us to look and feel.
