G. Hidderley captured these fishing boats on the Zuiderzee with a camera, at a time we don't know. The sepia tones give it such a vintage feel, don't they? I can imagine Hidderley out on the water, the damp air, the smell of the sea. It's quiet, almost meditative. The way the light hits the sails, creating these strong vertical shapes against the water, must have been the reason for capturing this scene. I wonder what Hidderley was thinking about while framing this shot. Was it the changing nature of the fishing industry, maybe? Or was it simply a love of the sea and the boats that sailed on it? This image connects to a long tradition of maritime painting, but it also stands alone as a quiet moment captured in time. Artists like Hidderley keep that conversation going, inspiring us to see the world in new ways.
