Curatorial notes

This page of notes, made by J.A. Jerichau, sometime around the turn of the century, is like a raw glimpse into the artist’s mind, where ideas and associations flow freely. The script is dense, layered, and, at times, almost illegible, giving it a kind of abstract quality despite all the words. I am really drawn to the way the page itself becomes a field of thought. You can almost feel the energy of the artist grappling with complex ideas, like the meaning of “The Ring” and its impact on the imagination. The notes are an invocation, a calling upon ancient gods and heroes. There's a palpable texture to the work, the paper looks aged and worn, and the ink has faded in places, adding a sense of history and mystery. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly’s sketchbooks, where writing becomes a form of drawing, and the act of notation is as important as the content itself. Art is an ongoing conversation, right? It invites ambiguity and multiple interpretations, and this piece is a perfect example of that.
