This photographic print shows the north side of the choir of the Oude Kerk in Naaldwijk. I wonder who this anonymous photographer was, and what drew them to this subject? Maybe they were interested in the play of light across the brickwork, how the shadows accentuate the texture and form. Think about the photographer framing this shot, stepping back to capture the architecture, and crouching down to include the fence in the foreground. It is all about decisions – and maybe a bit of intuition, too. I imagine the photographer considered how the architectural details create a sense of depth and perspective. The different window shapes suggest various styles and eras, like the building evolved over time. There’s a quiet beauty in the worn surfaces and simple composition. It reminds me of the way Agnes Martin approached her grid paintings, finding harmony and balance in structure. What do you think?
