This is Jørgen Koch’s architectural drawing, ‘Proposal for an Actor's Foyer’. Painted with pencil and watercolour, the drawing offers us a glimpse into the design considerations of the early 19th century, a period marked by the rise of the middle class and evolving social norms. The architectural blueprint allows us to consider the spatial dynamics of a theater, and think about how the actor's foyer might reflect the social hierarchies of its time. Who would have had access to this space? What kind of interactions would have taken place here? The drawing prompts us to reflect on the experience of theater-goers, and the potential disparities in their access to the arts. It is easy to imagine the social interactions, gossip, and power dynamics that would have unfolded within those walls.
