Larry Fink’s photograph captures a moment at Oslin's Graduation Party, somewhere in Martins Creek, Pennsylvania. A young woman’s caught mid-laugh, thrown back, maybe tickled by someone just behind her. It's a dark scene, but her body is really present. The texture of her skin, the awkwardness and the grace of the moment. And then there’s this other child in the background, sitting, watching, not laughing. Is she jealous or just serious? Fink’s got this way of getting right up close, like he's part of the party, and somehow that also creates a distance. He’s known for these kinds of documentary photos, social events, capturing the raw and sometimes uncomfortable moments of life. The light and shadow, it’s all very contrast-y. You see these stark blacks and bright whites – it gives it a sense of drama. And that little girl, so watchful. You start wondering about her story, what she's thinking. It's like Fink’s saying, "Here’s a party, but look closer, there’s always more than meets the eye."
