Anthonie Blocklandt rendered the Presentation of Christ in the Temple with pen and brown ink, brush and gray and brown wash, heightened with white body color, on gray laid paper. The use of these relatively humble materials is worth pausing on. Blocklandt was a skilled painter, perfectly capable of producing works on a much grander scale. Yet here, he uses the humbler medium of ink on paper. Looking at the image, you can sense how the ink bleeds into the fibrous paper, creating soft, blurred effects of light and shadow.
