Anthonie Blocklandt rendered the Presentation of Christ in the Temple with pen and brown ink, brush and gray and brown wash, heightened with white body color, on gray laid paper. The use of these relatively humble materials is worth pausing on. Blocklandt was a skilled painter, perfectly capable of producing works on a much grander scale. Yet here, he uses the humbler medium of ink on paper. Looking at the image, you can sense how the ink bleeds into the fibrous paper, creating soft, blurred effects of light and shadow. The white body color adds highlights, but the overall impression is one of tonal harmony. The choice of materials lends the work an informal, intimate quality. It is as if Blocklandt wanted to invite us into the scene, not as awestruck observers, but as fellow participants. We feel the artist's hand, and the very act of drawing, in every line and wash. This reminds us that art is not just about grand statements, but also about the quiet pleasure of making.
