Geoffrey Holt's "Mission Fountain" is rendered in watercolor, and look at those pale pinks and reds. I can just imagine Holt dabbing at this paper, maybe squinting a little, trying to capture the play of light on the water. Was he thinking about tiles glinting in the sun when he painted the scalloped design on top? It's pretty rhythmic, and a little obsessive. I get the feeling he was really there, breathing in the air, taking it all in. You know, artists are always in conversation with each other, even across time. Maybe Holt saw something that resonated with him, a shape, a color, a feeling from some Spanish Colonial building. And then he added his own twist, his own way of seeing the world, through this humble, intimate painting. It's like a little love letter to a place and time.
