Geoffrey Holt made this little study of a Mission Fountain, in watercolor, sometime during his long life. It's just so simple, you know? The pale, creamy walls, topped with that red tile trim - it feels very hand-done. Like something built with love, brick by brick. It's a good reminder that art doesn't need to shout. Sometimes it's about capturing quiet, ordinary moments. And there's something about the way the water is rendered, a kind of ghostly green, that really draws me in. It's not hyper-realistic, but it suggests the coolness and the depth, the shimmer of light on the surface. The fountain is a shape of a four-leafed clover, this relates to the four chambers, four corners of the world. Holt's work reminds me a bit of Charles Burchfield, the way he found beauty in the everyday. It's art as conversation, a back-and-forth across time and place. And it leaves you wondering: What stories could this fountain tell? What has it seen, heard, and reflected over the years? It's a little puzzle, a question mark in paint.
