George V. Vezolles made this drawing of Shaker Scales with watercolor on paper, and it's so light, it almost floats. The delicate strokes give this drawing such a gentle feeling. Look closely, and you can see a build-up of small marks, creating these layers of tone and colour. I love the bright red box on the bottom – the artist is really playing with how the eye moves around the artwork, drawing us down, then pulling us back up towards the scales. These scales, suspended in time, feel like a reminder of the balance we’re all searching for. You can see a similar play of color in the work of Charles Burchfield, another artist who used watercolor to capture something essential about ordinary objects. Art making is a conversation! And the real beauty is there’s no one right answer, just a sense of endless, airy possibility.
