Curator: This is "Kippers" by Prunella Clough. Editor: It's a humble image, wouldn't you say? Two fish, one atop the other, rendered in these rough, almost frantic lines. Curator: Indeed. Kippered herring, of course, carries its own history, bound to industry and working-class breakfasts. Consider how Clough often found beauty in the mundane, elevating overlooked corners of urban life. Editor: Right. The fish are such a classic symbol, loaded with meanings about abundance and faith. But here, stripped down, they feel…stark. Almost melancholy. Curator: Perhaps that's Clough prompting us to reflect on what we consume, both literally and figuratively. Editor: Well, whether intentional or not, it makes me think about what images we elevate and why. Fish for thought, I suppose.
