Richard Tepe made this photograph of a garden or park, we don't know exactly when. It's held at the Rijksmuseum. I wonder what the process of making something like this was like at the time? The soft sepia tones give it a timeless feel, like a memory fading at the edges. The composition is so simple: a line of trees and bushes, a path leading who knows where. It's almost like a stage set, waiting for something to happen. Look at the way the light filters through the leaves. I mean, the way the photographic emulsion reacts and translates light into tone. There's a stillness to it, a sense of quiet contemplation that reminds me of some of Atget's studies of Parisian parks. Both artists share an interest in capturing the overlooked beauty of everyday scenes, finding poetry in the mundane. It’s a reminder that art isn't about grand gestures but seeing the world with fresh eyes.
