LeRoy Neiman made Blind Brook Polo, with what looks like oil paint, and a whole lotta energy. Look how the colours here don’t describe but explode! The paint is put down so fast and juicy, it’s like he’s trying to capture the exact moment of impact. I love the way the background kind of dissolves into this turquoise haze, and then BAM, these horses come charging out. Check out the legs on the horses on the right. It’s all just gobs and streaks of colour, but somehow your eye pieces it all together. It’s like the painting is actively being made in front of you, a real performance. It reminds me a bit of Joan Mitchell’s crazy, colourful landscapes, but with a sporty, jazzy twist. Neiman isn’t afraid to embrace the chaos and let the paint do its thing. It's not about perfection, but about a feeling.
