This small gelatin silver print, *Untitled (couple dancing)* by Robert Burian, captures a couple frozen in time. Here’s what gets me – the way the emulsion renders the image and the way the photographer captured the couple in motion. The high contrast and limited grayscale make it feel both immediate and historical. I imagine Burian in the darkroom, playing with the light, dodging and burning to bring out the emotion of the moment. The woman’s radiant smile and the man’s poised look – you can feel the energy of the dance, the excitement of youth. Think about the constraints he was working within and how he was able to express feeling. You get the sense that Burian was deeply engaged with capturing life as it unfolded, finding beauty in the everyday, like many street photographers do. There’s a whole world of photographers out there all exploring light, shadow, and emotion.
