Niels Larsen Stevns made this sketch called ‘Lammet lovprises’ with ink on paper. I love the urgent quality of this drawing. I can imagine Stevns hunched over a sketchbook, quickly trying to capture the essence of a scene, like a visual note-taker. The ink is so alive. Look at those hatched lines forming the figures and the dense scribbles creating shadow and depth. It’s like he’s wrestling with the image, pulling it out of the ether. The composition is really interesting too. The figures pile on top of each other to create an upward-moving composition. It reminds me of some of the compositional structures you see in early Renaissance painting, or even folk art. You can feel the energy and movement of the artist's hand. It’s like he’s saying, “Here, look at this!” A conversation across time and space.
