Curatorial notes

Leo Gestel made "Three Pears" on paper with pen and ink; a simple, direct, yet charming composition. The shapes of the pears are outlined with thick, bold strokes, giving them a graphic quality. It's as if the artist is thinking through the subject, trying to capture the essential form of the pears and the leaves. Look how the leaves are stylized, almost like symbols, yet they still convey the essence of a leaf. The dots and dashes on the pears give them a sense of texture, as well as volume. The stark contrast between the black ink and the white paper creates a bold visual statement. It reminds me a little of Emil Nolde’s graphic work, in the way that simple shapes are used to evoke a feeling or a mood. It’s more than just a drawing of pears; it’s an exploration of form and line, and a reminder that even the simplest of subjects can be a source of artistic inspiration.
