Carl Reichert created this fantastical and lighthearted oil painting, The Kittens’ Recital, sometime between the mid-19th and early 20th century, capturing a whimsical moment of feline musical exploration. I can only imagine Reichert gently coaxing each brushstroke, deciding which kitten gets which spot on the keys or perched on the music sheets. The textures are smooth, blended to give a sense of soft fur and polished wood. I like the almost naive way the artist has dealt with the subject matter. The little kitten with a red ribbon around its neck, stepping onto the piano keys with an inquisitive paw; it reminds me of a child experimenting with a new toy. It makes me wonder if Reichert saw a connection between the playful curiosity of kittens and the human pursuit of art and music. Like all artists, he’s in conversation with other painters and artistic traditions, maybe even challenging the stuffy conventions of academic art with a wink and a purr! This painting feels like an invitation to embrace the unexpected, to find joy in the absurd, and to celebrate the messy, unpredictable nature of creativity.
