Curator: This is Sir George Clausen's "Gleaners Coming Home," part of the Tate Collections. The painting, though undated, portrays women carrying heavy sacks, presumably filled with gleaned crops. Editor: It immediately strikes me as a representation of labor, the sheer physical burden etched on the figures. The soft light almost romanticizes their struggle, doesn't it? Curator: Clausen's emphasis on the weight and texture of the sacks, the way they dominate the composition, suggests an interest in the material realities of agricultural work. It speaks to the social context of rural labor and its impact on these women. Editor: And to the power dynamics inherent in the act of gleaning itself. Who owns the land? Who decides what’s left behind for these women to collect? The painting prompts us to consider issues of land ownership and social stratification. Curator: It's interesting how Clausen uses light and shadow to both highlight the women's forms and obscure their individual identities, focusing instead on their collective labor. The material of the sacks and their contents almost become stand-ins for these women. Editor: Ultimately, the artwork encourages us to reflect on the social and economic factors that define these women’s lives, and the long history of labor exploitation. Curator: Yes, it brings a heightened awareness of the role of materials and production within the cycle of art.

Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from fields after harvest. The right to glean fields was reserved for people experiencing poverty. It became a popular subject in Victorian art but was often romanticised. This picture of women and children burdened with heavy loads, is set in Essex. Their hardship is apparent in their stances and empty gazes. Contemporary critics, however, mostly focused on Clausen’s style: ‘they carry the sun with them as they walk: they are absorbed in heat and colour’ (Pall Mall Gazette). Clausen dedicated his art to painting scenes of rural life. Gallery label, October 2020
