This sketch of an apostle with raised arms was drawn by Niels Larsen Stevns; an unrealized figure for the Ascension. Just look at those graphite marks, so tentative, like he’s feeling his way through the form. I imagine the artist, Stevns, circling the figure, trying to capture the right pose, that perfect balance of weight and gesture. You know, it's a real dance between the eye and the hand. It’s like he’s asking, "How can I make this figure feel like it’s truly ascending?" And the surface is so bare, just the paper itself, giving the sketch this incredible sense of immediacy. Every line feels like a decision, a question. It reminds me of the way other painters, like, say, Giotto, used to think through the composition. I love how artists are always in dialogue with one another, across time. It's like one big conversation, inspiring each other to push the boundaries of what painting can be.
