This 'Untitled' sketch was created by Mark Rothko, on the back of another work. The cream-colored paper is dominated by empty space, with sparse markings in graphite that call to mind a musical score, or perhaps a coded language yet to be deciphered. A concentrated burst of dark scribbles in the upper-left plays against a linear structure at the bottom right. The contrast between the gestural and the geometric introduces a visual tension, a quiet drama enacted through line and form.
